Pokerstars: Phil Ivey
All though his talent was already known, Phil Ivey became famous after his phenomenal success at the World Series of Poker in 2002. Phil took home three gold bracelets that year (tying the record held by Phil Hellmuth and Ted Forrest for most wins in a single year).
Some might know Phil Ivey as the Tiger Woods of poker, but to us he is simply the Phil Ivey of poker - totally in a class by himself. He is without a doubt our favorite poker tournament player and we love his aggressive method of operation. When we watch him play in poker tournaments, we are amazed by his focus and sheer determination. He seems to be paying attention to everything, absorbing every bit of information that his poker opponents give him.
If you sit down at a table with Phil Ivey, you are most likely going to notice his aggressive style. Most people will agree that it is very difficult to read Phil's face. He looks almost a bit sad even in jackpot situations and if you try to get to him, you may have to scream sometimes, as he sticks firmly to his iPod. Besides the Apple wear, he is a Los Angeles NBA fan, so don't be surprised if you see a team jersey on his body.
Phil Ivey is less than 30 years old. That is almost nothing for a poker player. But he is considered to be one of the best players in the world. They say he will certainly win the WSOP in a couple of years.
There's no exact number on how much money Ivey's made so far at major tournaments, but it exceeds a stunning $7 million in late 2005. His winnings include a total of five World Series of Poker bracelets, most notably one in late June 2005, where he scored a total of $635,603. Besides WSOP, Phil has notable performances at World Poker Tour, although he has not yet had any winnings there.
Furthermore, in February of 2006, Phil played heads-up with Andy Beal, a mathematician who has gained fame for his challenges of big-name poker players. By the end of a three-day heads-up match, Phil Ivey had taken $16.6 Million from Beal.
Phil's World Poker Tour credits include a third place finish at the Foxwoods event, second at Tunica, third at the World Poker Tour Final, 6th at Borgata, 3rd at Reno Hilton, 3rd again at the World Poker Tour Championship. He has several World Series of Poker bracelets. In 2000, he won the Pot Limit event, in 2002 he won the S.H.O.E, 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo Split, and the $1500 7 Card stud event and in 2005 he won the Pot Limit Omaha event. Other notable finishes are his first place finishes at the 2004 Championship at Turning Stone and 2005 Monte Carlo Millions.
You can play with Phil at his own table at Full Tilt Poker .
